know, there's a whole obama clan down in one section of come here, the kendu bay area, and there's another one, which the united states knows better in a larger district. and that's where obama's stepgrandmother lives. they are not even blood relatives but she's the one that everybody goes to visit, everyone thinks that's where the obama's are from. there's a whole nother group of obama's that i'm going to deal with, probably in a more substantive way than her, in terms of where the story really comes from. it reminded me a little bit of windows during the clinton book, and what people saw was, because he said, it is in clinton's convention acceptance, a man from hope. from hope arkansas this little town in arkansas. the simplicity of the world life and, in fact, he was from hot springs, a completely different place, much more cosmopolitan and complex, and with a darker side to. the obama store, what people don't know is -- the real story of barack obama, sr. and his father takes place somewhere else, down in kendu bay, and that's where the african section of this book will start.

. right now, the leaders of the house and senate are sitting down with president obama in a search for an 11th hour deal to prevent severe tax hikes and spending cuts from automatically kicking in with the new year. cnn's chief white house correspondent jessica yellin is getting new details. jess can ka, what are you hearing about that meeting? >> reporter: candy, the president is going to explain or reiterate the position he took on friday, that he would like a plan that extends tax rates for people who make $250,000 and below but raises them for those who make more than that. that it extends unemployment benefits for americans. and if the president, i'm told will say if he does not get an agreement to that plan, he will ask the other leaders what they can agree to, what what they would like instead. if they cannot come up with a proposal that will pass the house and the senate, will ask for a vote on his measure. but that meeting, candy, is still going on. congre congressional leaders arrived at the white house for a last-ditch meeting just days before a new year's deadline. back on

a scaled down version of where president obama was in his opening offer. so we're still rat just a smaller version of an opening offer, especially when you consider taxes. we're not sure in the hour and five minute meeting was held here at the white house if congressional leaders were able to make any progress the way the white house phrased this is basically this is the president's offer. he wants up-or-down vote in the house and senate unless republican leaders come back with a second offer. that is something we've not gotten word if they threw that meeting had managed to make any progress. so far three of the big four congressional leaders left. we're still waiting on senate majority leader harry reid to leave the west wing. but at his point, three out of the four left. didn't say a word. we don't expect the senate majority leader to do anything different and actually talk to us about this one. so we're basically waiting for congressional aides to leak it to us. david: one thing that was just leaked to us, house speaker boehner is not going to the capitol. again they will have,

obama, he expects to try one last ditch effort. a scaled-down proposal that may be able to win some agreements. republicans have a hardy sort of drawn their lines in the sand. john boehner, house speaker told his troops yesterday that he would not go in there and cut any deals. mitch mcconnell is going in there, he spends all morning talking on the floor with his members in the middle of a bunch of votes over there, he's taking their thoughts about what they can expect over there. but there is no reason to think that there is going to be any big breakthrough here. the two sides are just too far apart and too entrenched. is essentially a last-ditch effort to try to basically see if something gets done. heather: talk to me more about that. what we are seeing is a plan c. extending tax cuts, unemployment benefits for people who are going to lose it at the end of the year, and laying the groundwork for growth and deficit reduction. that sounds like tamino guaranteed significant cuts either. >> that's right. part of the problem there for republicans is what they are giving him. they are
